Dry eye disease is not always caused by a lack of tears. In many cases, the problem is poor tear quality, which allows moisture to evaporate too quickly. At Northwest Eye Center in Crystal Lake, we offer OptiLight IPL therapy to help address the underlying inflammation associated with dry eye disease and improve tear film stability.
Healthy tears contain three important components: water, oil, and mucus. The oil layer, produced by the meibomian glands along the eyelids, helps prevent tears from evaporating.
When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the protective oil layer becomes less effective. This can cause burning, redness, blurry vision, irritation, and excessive tearing.
Traditional dry eye treatments, such as artificial tears, may provide temporary relief. OptiLight IPL takes a different approach by targeting inflammation that contributes to poor meibomian gland function.
OptiLight uses intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to deliver controlled pulses of light to the skin surrounding the eyes. The treatment is designed to reduce inflammation associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and support healthier tear production.
OptiLight IPL therapy may help improve tear quality by:
• Reducing inflammation associated with chronic dry eye disease.
• Supporting healthier meibomian gland function.
• Improving the stability of the protective oil layer of tears.
• Helping reduce tear evaporation and associated discomfort.
• Improving symptoms such as dryness, burning, and irritation.
By addressing factors contributing to tear instability, OptiLight may provide longer-lasting symptom improvement for eligible patients.
At Northwest Eye Center in Crystal Lake, we begin with a dry eye evaluation to determine whether OptiLight is appropriate for your symptoms. During treatment, we protect your eyes with specialized shields and apply a cooling gel before delivering gentle pulses of light to the surrounding facial skin.
A typical treatment plan includes four sessions spaced approximately two to four weeks apart. Each session generally takes 10 to 15 minutes.
We may also recommend meibomian gland expression and other dry eye treatments to help improve results. While some patients notice improvement after a few sessions, individual responses vary, and maintenance treatments may be beneficial.
OptiLight is designed for adults ages 22 and older with moderate to severe signs and symptoms of dry eye disease caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. Eligibility also depends on skin type, medical history, and other factors.
Our Crystal Lake eye care team evaluates your symptoms, tear quality, and gland health to determine whether IPL therapy should be included in your personalized dry eye treatment plan.
