Summer should be a time to enjoy being outdoors, but for people with dry eye, warmer weather can bring more burning, irritation, redness, and fluctuating vision. Heat, wind, air conditioning, and increased time outside can make an already unstable tear film feel even more uncomfortable. At Northwest Eye Center, we look beyond temporary symptom relief to identify factors contributing to dry eye and provide treatment that addresses the source of the problem.
Dry eye symptoms often become more noticeable when tears evaporate too quickly or the surface of the eye becomes irritated. Spending more time around air conditioning, fans, outdoor wind, and hot weather can make it harder for the tear film to stay stable.
Summer activities may also expose the eyes to environmental irritants that contribute to discomfort. Patients may notice symptoms such as:
• Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
• Red or irritated eyes
• Excessive watering
• Sensitivity to light
• Blurry or fluctuating vision
• Contact lens discomfort
When these symptoms continue despite artificial tears or other at-home measures, there may be an underlying issue that requires more targeted dry eye treatment.
One of the most common contributors to evaporative dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. These glands produce the oily portion of the tear film that helps slow tear evaporation. When they are not functioning properly, tears can evaporate too quickly and leave the eyes feeling dry and irritated.
Inflammation is an important underlying factor in MGD. When inflammation continues, it can contribute to an ongoing cycle of poor gland function, tear film instability, and recurring dry eye symptoms.
At Northwest Eye Center, we use OptiLight by Lumenis as an advanced option for dry eye management. OptiLight uses precisely controlled intense pulsed light, or IPL, to address signs of dry eye associated with meibomian gland dysfunction. The treatment specifically targets inflammation, one of the key factors involved in MGD.
Rather than relying only on lubricating drops to temporarily reduce discomfort, OptiLight allows us to address an important underlying contributor to recurring dry eye symptoms. Treatment is performed in our office and may be combined with additional dry eye therapies depending on each patient's individual needs.
If burning, redness, irritation, or fluctuating vision keeps returning this summer, it may be time to look beyond temporary relief. We can evaluate your tear film and meibomian gland function to determine whether IPL therapy is appropriate for your dry eye treatment plan.
