What Is LenSx Laser Cataract Surgery?

LenSx is a femtosecond laser system used to assist with key steps of cataract surgery. At Northwest Eye Center, we use LenSx technology to create precise incisions and can use laser-created limbal relaxing incisions to address mild astigmatism.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens, or IOL. Many patients experience improved vision within a few days, although the eye continues healing after vision begins to clear.

Which Fall Activities Can You Resume First?

Recovery varies from person to person, so your surgeon's instructions should always guide your activity level. Light everyday activities are often easier to return to first, while strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that expose the eye to dirt or water may need to wait.

During early recovery, patients should generally be cautious with:

•          Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and significant bending

•          Yardwork that may expose the eyes to dust, dirt, leaves, or debris

•          Swimming, hot tubs, and other activities where water could enter the eye

•          Sports or activities that could result in an accidental impact to the eye

•          Driving until your vision is clear and your eye doctor has advised that it is safe

Walking and other gentle activities may be appropriate sooner, depending on how your eye is healing.

Be Careful With Illinois Fall Yardwork

Raking leaves, cleaning gutters, gardening, and preparing your home for colder weather may seem routine, but these activities can involve bending, lifting, dust, and airborne debris. If you recently had LenSx laser cataract surgery, ask us before returning to strenuous outdoor chores. Once you are cleared, protective eyewear can also help reduce exposure to wind, dust, and debris while working outside.

Keep Up With Your Post-Operative Care

Following your cataract surgery instructions is just as important as limiting certain activities. Use your prescribed eye drops as directed, avoid rubbing your eye, and attend all scheduled follow-up visits.
