Cataract surgery has helped many patients restore clearer vision when a cloudy natural lens begins interfering with everyday activities. While the goal of cataract surgery remains the same - removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL) - there are different approaches to performing the procedure. At Northwest Eye Center, we offer advanced cataract surgery options and help patients determine which approach best fits their eyes and vision goals.
Traditional cataract surgery is a well-established procedure that involves creating small incisions in the eye and removing the cloudy natural lens. Ultrasound energy is typically used to break the cataract into smaller pieces so it can be removed. Once the cataract is gone, a clear IOL is positioned inside the natural lens capsule.
This approach has been successfully used for many years and remains an appropriate choice for many cataract patients. The specific surgical technique and lens selected depend on the health of your eyes, your prescription, and your vision needs.
Laser-assisted cataract surgery uses advanced femtosecond laser technology to perform certain steps of the procedure with added precision. At Northwest Eye Center, we use the LenSx femtosecond laser, which allows our surgeon to create precise incisions and can also assist with astigmatism correction.
Laser technology may be used to create the initial incisions and assist with preparing or breaking apart the cloudy lens before it is removed. This allows certain portions of cataract surgery to be customized based on the unique structure of your eye.
Both procedures are designed to remove the cataract and replace the cloudy lens with an IOL. Some of the main differences include:
• Traditional cataract surgery relies primarily on surgical instruments and ultrasound technology
• Laser cataract surgery uses a femtosecond laser for specific steps of the procedure
• Laser technology offers additional precision when creating certain incisions
• The LenSx laser may help address astigmatism through precisely placed laser incisions
• Both approaches can be paired with different IOL options depending on your vision goals
Choosing between traditional and laser cataract surgery is only one part of planning your procedure. Your replacement lens also plays an important role in your vision after surgery.
We offer advanced lens options, including toric lenses for astigmatism and lenses designed to provide a broader range of vision. We evaluate your eyes carefully and discuss your daily activities, prescription, and expectations before recommending a cataract surgery plan.
There is no single cataract surgery option that is right for every patient. Your eye anatomy, degree of cataract development, astigmatism, overall eye health, and vision goals all influence the recommendation. During your cataract evaluation, we can explain the differences between laser-assisted and traditional cataract surgery and help you make an informed decision.
