When a child’s nearsightedness continues to increase, updating their glasses prescription is not the only option. Myopia management focuses on slowing the progression of nearsightedness while helping children see clearly. One option we offer at Northwest Eye Center is Orthokeratology, commonly known as Ortho-K.
Ortho-K uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea. After removing the lenses in the morning, many patients can see clearly during the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses. For children with progressive myopia, Ortho-K may also be incorporated into a broader myopia management plan.
Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurry while close-up vision generally remains clearer. It often develops during childhood and can progress as the eyes continue growing.
Managing myopia is about more than correcting blurry vision. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased lifetime risk of certain eye conditions, which is why monitoring progression during childhood is important. Regular comprehensive eye exams allow us to track prescription changes and determine whether myopia management may be appropriate.
Ortho-K lenses are custom-fitted rigid gas permeable contact lenses. Your child wears them while sleeping, and the lenses gently change the shape of the cornea overnight. The effect is temporary, so the lenses must be worn as prescribed to maintain clear daytime vision. Ortho-K can be especially appealing for active children who would prefer not to wear glasses or contacts during sports, school, and other daytime activities.
Every child’s eyes and prescription are different. A detailed eye examination and specialized measurements are necessary before determining whether Ortho-K is appropriate. Factors we consider can include:
• Your child’s current level of myopia
• How quickly their prescription has been changing
• Corneal shape and overall eye health
• Their ability to follow proper lens cleaning and handling instructions
• Their lifestyle, activities, and vision needs
Because Ortho-K involves overnight contact lens wear, proper hygiene and consistent follow-up visits are essential. Children and parents should be comfortable following the recommended cleaning, insertion, removal, and replacement instructions.
Myopia management is not one-size-fits-all. Depending on your child’s age, prescription, eye health, and rate of progression, different approaches may be considered. In addition to Ortho-K, myopia management options can include specialized soft contact lenses such as MiSight 1 Day and specially designed spectacle lenses such as Essilor Stellest.
Our goal is to evaluate how your child’s vision is changing and recommend an approach suited to their individual needs. Continued monitoring helps us determine how well the chosen strategy is working and whether adjustments are needed over time.
If your child’s prescription seems to change every year, an evaluation can help determine whether Ortho-K or another myopia management option may be appropriate. We can assess their vision, eye health, corneal measurements, and prescription history before discussing the available choices with you.
